In September 2014, the exhibition “It’s all, oh so souvenir to me! Vol.2” traveled to the Greek island of Nisyros, at the Sterna Nisyros Residences as part of the “Time Capsule Art Project”. Located in the medieval castle of Pantoniki, on the top of the mystical village of Emporeios, Sterna became the starting point for an exploration about the role of the souvenir as an object of memories.
Materials, colours and energy from the volcano were the ingredients that the island offered generously. The island became the spark that started a creative dialogue about the purpose of souvenir, its role as an object of memory from a visit to a destination and how the destination affects the experience of the visitor during and after the visit.
The photos below show all the objects created during the residency by Dimosthenis Serketzis.

heliades were the children of the Sun. They are also Greek mementos, photographs taken by the Greek sun, allowing memories of Greece to be fixed, as they would be on photographic paper, on pieces of Greek Marble. heliades are part of the exhibition It’s all, oh so souvenir to me! Vol. 2!. More information regarding It’s all, oh so souvenir to me! Vol. 2! you can find on http://www.occhi.biz/v2/index.php/news/105-its-all-oh-so-souvenir-to-me.html
These marble blueprints are created using a photographic printing process. A photosensitive solution is applied to the surface of the marble, making it sensitive to the ultraviolet light of the sun. The blue colour is the result of the sun reacting to the photosensitive surface of the marble.
heliades can be either hung from a wall or be placed on a surface as a picture frame.
The outcome has been described as different, imaginative, unique, brilliant.
The exhibition “It’s all, oh so souvenir to me!” made its debut last summer bringing under a single umbrella the interpretations of over 60 Greek designers to the question:
What would Greece be if it were a souvenir?
Different views, backgrounds, experiences and perspectives came together in an attempt to redefine the design and meaning of the traditional Greek souvenir! Creators coming from all sectors of design – architects, product designers, photographers, ceramists, visual artists, illustrators, fashion and accessories designers, stylists, branding creators – portrayed a line of objects with different utilitarian value, materials, ideas and concepts, all with a focus on Greece.
Presenting items that combine usability and innovation, conceptual design and quality while at the same time reflecting the designers’ personal thoughts and feelings of what Greece is and what it means for them.
This year the exhibition is grows bigger adding more designers, new ideas and objects to the project.
